BICEPS TENDON REPAIR AT THE ELBOW

A biceps tendon repair at the elbow is a surgical procedure that is performed to repair a torn or ruptured biceps tendon at the elbow joint. The biceps muscle is located in the front of the upper arm and helps to flex the elbow and rotate the forearm. The biceps tendon attaches the biceps muscle to the bones in the elbow.

The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia or regional anaesthesia, and Dr Singh will make an incision near the elbow to access the damaged tendon. The torn or ruptured tendon is then reattached to the bone using sutures, anchors, or other specialised hardware.

Dr Singh will typically use an arthroscope, a small camera that is inserted through a small incision, to guide the placement of the hardware and ensure proper alignment of the repaired tendon.

After the tendon has been reattached, he will close the incisions with sutures or staples and apply a dressing to the area. Patients may need to wear a brace or splint for several weeks to immobilise the elbow and allow the tendon to heal.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises are typically prescribed after the surgery to help patients regain strength and range of motion in the elbow. It may take several months for the tendon to fully heal, and patients should avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting during this time.

A biceps tendon repair at the elbow is a reliable method to fix a damaged biceps tendon and return the elbow joint to its normal function and mobility. The outcome of the surgery is influenced by factors such as the location and extent of the tendon injury, the patient’s general health, and their commitment to rehabilitation and ongoing care. These factors can all be discussed in your consultation with Dr Singh.
