Capsular release is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) that has not responded to other forms of treatment, including corticosteroid injections, joint distension, and shoulder manipulation (physiotherapy).
Dr Singh performs a capsular release using a minimally invasive surgical procedure under local or general anaesthetic. Three small incisions are made on the shoulder and an arthroscope, and another instrument is inserted. The arthroscope contains a camera that allows Dr Singh to see inside your shoulder and once he evaluated your condition, the other instrument is used to cut tight capsular tissues surrounding your shoulder joint. Using radiofrequency waves Dr Singh can also cauterise the tissue, minimising any bleeding. The incision sites are then closed with sutures.
Following surgery, you will be given adequate pain relief and also follow-up physiotherapy to support your rehabilitation and help to restore full movement to your shoulder.
It’s worth noting that capsular release surgery for frozen shoulder is typically only recommended in severe cases where other treatments have failed, and that the procedure carries risks such as infection, bleeding, and nerve damage. As with any surgical procedure, it’s important for patients to discuss the risks and benefits with Dr Singh and make an informed decision about whether it is right for them.
