CARPAL TUNNEL RELEASE / DECOMPRESSION SURGERY

Carpal tunnel release surgery is a procedure that is performed to relieve pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. The median nerve provides sensation to the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger, and also controls some of the muscles in the hand.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed within the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway in the wrist. This can cause pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the affected hand.

The Surgical Procedure

During carpal tunnel release surgery, Dr Singh makes a small incision in the palm of the hand and cuts the ligament that forms the roof of the carpal tunnel. This increases the size of the tunnel and relieves pressure on the median nerve.

The procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia, and usually takes less than an hour. Patients may be able to go home on the same day of the surgery.

Recovery Timelines

After the surgery, patients will need to wear a splint or brace to immobilise the wrist and protect the incision site. Dr Singh may recommend Physiotherapy to help regain strength and mobility in the hand and wrist.

Recovery time varies, but most patients are able to resume normal activities within a few weeks after the surgery however, it may take several months for the hand to fully recover.

Potential Risks

As with any surgery, there are some risks associated with carpal tunnel release surgery. These include infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and stiffness or weakness in the hand or wrist. These risks however are relatively low, and the procedure is generally considered safe and effective for relieving the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
