DUPUYTREN RELEASE SURGERY

Dupuytren release surgery is a surgical procedure used to treat Dupuytren’s contracture, a condition where the tissues in the palm of the hand become thickened and contracted, causing the fingers to curl inward. This can make it difficult to perform everyday tasks such as gripping objects or shaking hands.

The goal of Dupuytren release surgery is to release the contracted tissue and restore normal movement and function to the hand. The surgical procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia, meaning the patient is awake but the area around the hand is numbed.

The Surgical Procedure

During the procedure, Dr Singh will make a small incision in the palm of the hand and carefully dissect the contracted tissue away from the underlying tendons and nerves. The surgeon will then carefully remove the affected tissue and close the incision with sutures or staples.

After the procedure, the patient will typically need to wear a splint or brace to immobilise the hand and protect the incision site as it heals. Physiotherapy may also be prescribed to help improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the hand.

Recovery Timelines

Recovery from Dupuytren release surgery can vary depending on the individual patient and the extent of the procedure. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a few weeks to a few months after surgery. However, it is important to follow Dr Singhs instructions for recovery and rehabilitation to avoid re-injury and ensure a successful outcome.

Potential Risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications associated with Dupuytren release surgery, including infection, bleeding, nerve damage, and recurrence of the contracture. However, these risks are relatively rare, and the procedure is generally considered safe and effective for treating Dupuytren’s contracture.
