HIP PAIN

Hip Antroscopy

Hip pain is a common complaint, with everyone from young, to old at risk.

Your pain may not always be felt precisely over the hip joint rather, in and around the hip joint and this means, why you are suffering, can be difficult to pinpoint without a proper diagnosis.

Causes of hip pain

The cause for hip pain is multifactorial but the exact position of your pain usually suggests the probable cause, or underlying condition causing it.

Pain felt inside the hip joint, or in your groin area is more likely to be because of the problems within the hip joint. Similarly, the pain felt on the outer side of your hip, upper thigh or buttocks may be a result of the problems of the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and soft tissues surrounding the hip joint. Certain disease conditions affecting other parts of your body such as lower back or knees however can also cause hip pain.

The main cause of sudden pain in the hip is usually from an injury resulting in a hip fracture. Hip fractures are common in the elderly because the bones wear out as age advances.

Other causes of hip pain may include arthritis, bursitis, infections, lower back pain, osteonecrosis of the hip, sprains or a strain, tendinitis resulting from repetitive use, among others.

Diagnosing hip pain

When diagnosing your hip pain, Dr Singh will go through all your medical history, followed by a physical examination. Your medical history is compiled by asking you questions about your pain, any medications you may be taking, and prior injury and other bone and joint problems you may have. The physical examination will evaluate your range of motion and Dr Singh will observe how you walk, sit, bend, and move which all assist with your assessment and diagnosis.

Further testing is sometimes required including x-ray’s, blood tests, or an MRI.

Treating hip pain

Treatment of your hip pain greatly depends on the exact cause of the pain.

Often, simple measures such as hip strengthening exercises, physiotherapy, and weight loss along with joint supplements are suitable first steps for you, as well as prescription tablets called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID’s).

It’s important to remember that many conditions can cause hip pain, so a correct diagnosis in consultation with Dr Singh is critical in determining the best treatment option for you.
