PATELLA STABILISATION SURGERY

Patella stabilisation surgery is a surgical procedure designed to stabilise (prevent dislocation) the patella (kneecap) within the femoral groove. The procedure is typically performed when a patient has recurrent patellar dislocations or subluxations, which occur when the kneecap slides out of place, causing pain, instability, and other symptoms.

There are many options for this type of surgery, which can include both bone and soft tissue procedures or a combination of both, depending on the specific underlying cause of the patellar instability.

Some of the most common techniques include:

Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction: This involves reconstructing the ligament that runs along the inside of the knee and helps to hold the patella in place.

Lateral release: This involves releasing the tight lateral retinaculum (a band of tissue on the outside of the knee) to allow the patella to track properly within the femoral groove.

Tibial tubercle osteotomy: This involves moving the attachment point of the patellar tendon on the tibia (shinbone) to a different location, in order to realign the patella with the femoral groove.

Combined procedures: In some cases, a combination of these techniques may be used to achieve the desired results.

The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia, and may require an overnight hospital stay. After surgery, patients will need to use crutches for several weeks, and will undergo physical therapy to help regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee.

Patella stabilisation surgery can be an effective treatment for recurrent patellar instability, but it is not appropriate for all patients. Dr Singh can help determine if this procedure is right for you, based on factors such as the severity of your condition, your age and activity level, and your overall health and medical history.
