SCAPHOID FRACTURE

Your scaphoid is one of the eight small carpal bones in your wrist and can be injured when a significant load is placed on it such as from a fall onto an outstretched hand.

The Scaphoid bone is a small bone located on the thumb side of the wrist, just above the radius bone. It is one of the most common fractures of the wrist, particularly among young adults.

The Scaphoid bone plays an important role in the stability and function of the wrist joint, and a fracture in this bone can cause pain and limited mobility of the wrist.

Symptoms of a Scaphoid fracture include:

  • Pain and tenderness in the wrist, particularly on the thumb side
  • Swelling and bruising around the wrist
  • Difficulty gripping or holding objects
  • Limited mobility of the wrist, particularly with extension and flexion
  • Pain that worsens with use of the wrist, particularly with activities that involve gripping or twisting.

In some cases, a Scaphoid fracture may not be immediately apparent on an X-ray, particularly if the fracture is small or located in the middle of the bone. If there is suspicion of a Scaphoid fracture, a follow-up X-ray or other imaging tests such as CT scan or MRI may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment for a Scaphoid fracture may involve immobilisation with a cast or splint, particularly if the fracture is stable and has not shifted out of place. More severe or displaced fractures may require surgery to stabilise the bone and restore normal wrist function. Physiotherapy may also be necessary to help restore range of motion and strength of the wrist joint.

It’s important to note that hand conditions including fractures can have multiple symptoms and often, there may be a combination of factors involved so, if you are experiencing symptoms of hand or wrist pain, it’s best to consult with Dr Singh for an accurate diagnosis and to create an appropriate treatment plan for you.
