Patellar tendon repair is a surgical procedure designed to repair a ruptured or torn patellar tendon. The patellar tendon connects the patella (kneecap) to the tibia (shinbone) and helps to provide stability to the knee joint during movement.
Patellar tendon injuries can be caused by a sudden, forceful impact to the knee, such as a fall or a sports-related injury. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, and difficulty straightening the leg.
During patellar tendon repair surgery, Dr Singh will make an incision over the knee and carefully reattach the torn ends of the patellar tendon using sutures or anchors. In some cases, a graft from another tendon or ligament may be used to reinforce the repair. The incision is then closed, and the knee is immobilised in a brace or cast to allow for healing.
After surgery, patients will need to use crutches for several weeks, and will undergo physical therapy to help regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee. Full recovery may take several months, depending on the extent of the injury and the type of surgery performed.
Patellar tendon repair is typically reserved for patients with complete tears or ruptures of the patellar tendon. Partial tears or strains may be treated with non-surgical methods, such as rest, ice, compression, and physical therapy. These can all be discussed with Dr Singh during your consultation to help determine the best course of treatment for your specific injury.
