Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is a surgical procedure that is done to address a dislocated kneecap or chronic instability of the kneecap due to a tear or rupture of the MPFL. Your MPFL is a ligament that runs from the inside part of your kneecap (patella) to your thigh bone (femur) and helps to keep the kneecap in place during movements.
During surgery, the damaged MPFL is replaced with a graft, which can be harvested from your own body (autograft) or from a donor (allograft). The graft is threaded through holes, drilled in the patella and femur and secured in place with screws or anchors.
Surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia, and you can usually go home the same day or after a short hospital stay. Recovery from MPFL reconstruction surgery can take several months and involves a rehabilitation program that includes physiotherapy to help regain your strength, mobility, and stability in the knee.
It is important to follow Dr Singh’s instructions and rehabilitation program carefully following MPFL reconstruction surgery to ensure you achieve optimal results from the procedure.
