Patella realignment surgery, also known as tibial tubercle transfer, is a surgical procedure that is designed to correct patellar malalignment. Patellar malalignment is a condition in which the patella (kneecap) does not track properly within the femoral groove, causing pain, instability, and other symptoms.
During the procedure, Dr Singh will detach the tibial tubercle (a bony bump on the front of the tibia, or shinbone) and reposition it slightly to the side, in order to realign the patella with the femoral groove. He may also shave down any rough or uneven surfaces on the patella or femur, to help the kneecap glide smoothly within the joint.
The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia and may require an overnight hospital stay. After surgery, patients will need to use crutches for several weeks, and will undergo physical therapy to help regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee.
Patella realignment surgery can be an effective treatment for certain types of patellar malalignment, but it is not appropriate for all patients. Dr Singh can help determine if this procedure is right for you, based on factors such as the severity of your condition, your age and activity level, and your overall health and medical history.
